Messiah

1978 Philips issue of the 1966 Davis recording, with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Made in Holland; dead wax 802 723 1Y 5 670 114, consistent with the Dutch Philips matrix system. Green cover, carrying the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis emblem. Historically the Davis is a turning point — it pulled Messiah back from the huge Victorian-scale forces toward something closer to Handel’s own, and Philips’s analogue recordings from that period are well regarded. This is the collection’s only classical set, which revises an earlier assumption that there was none.
